Preoperative exams
These include :
- A questionnaire concerning your medical history, medications and possible allergies
- Clinical examination
- Blood test
- Electrocardiogram and chest X-ray when indicated
Once your surgery has been scheduled we request you call the preoperative exams department (tel 02/434 86 41) in order to plan exams ahead of surgery. Please take with you any relevant exams done outside the hospital or send them by email to preop.delta@chirec.be
The day of your surgery : no drinking or eating as of midnight except medication
Medications to be discontinued
Patients without any history of cardiovascular disease or stroke are advised to stop aspirin 7 days prior to surgery. Ask approval of your family doctor beforehand. Other anticoagulants are liable to interfere with surgery (Sintrom, Pradaxa, Xarelto, Eliquis, Plavix) and must be replaced by daily subcutaneous heparin injections 2-10 days prior to surgery. Certain antidiabetics (Glucophage, Metformax, Metformine) must be discontinued 24 hours before surgery or before intravenous contrast-enhanced radiology such as CT scan.
Fibre-free diet
Before undergoing colonoscopy or bowel surgery you may be instructed to follow a diet for 5 days.
Foods to be avoided : fruit (all forms), vegetables (all forms), whole bread, brown rice, fibre-rich cereals
Authorised foods: white bread, butter, honey, low-fat milk products, coffee, tea, chocolate milk, plain steak, roasted chicken, plain fish with butter, plain omelette, pasta, potatoes, white rice, sandwichs (ham, cheese, chicken, ground meat), plain yoghurt, rice pudding, custard tart, biscuits, cake, waffle and all drinks except fruit and vegetable juice
Constipating diet
Indicated in certain cases of diarrhea and dehydration.
Liquids : water, tea, vegetable broth, rice water
Solid foods : carrots, rice, bananas, grated raw apples, quince sauce or jelly
